Depression is a very common mental health issue. In the United States, it is estimated that over 16 million people struggle with depression. Depression can leave us with feelings of sadness, lack of motivation, negative thoughts, low mood, diminished interest in activities, withdrawal, feelings of worthlessness/guilt, and thoughts of suicide or self-harm.
There are some ways to help you manage depression. These include: diet, exercise, proper sleep, social support and connection, changing your negative thoughts, and engaging in pleasurable activities. If you struggle with depression, I suggest creating a depression toolbox.
A depression toolbox is any form of container, or even an area in your house where you write out your depression plan. These are a list of things you can do to quickly boost your mood. Of course, the actual list will vary from person to person. Put this list or “toolbox” where you can easily access it for times when you are feeling down. When you are feeling down, reach into your “toolbox” and try one or two of the things you have written down.
Here is an example of a list found in a depression toolbox:
- Talk to a friend
- Draw, Paint, Journal
- Do a puzzle
- Play with a pet
- Take a warm bath with essential oils
- Read a good book
- Have your favorite snack
- Watch a funny movie
- Go for a walk/jog
- Read a list of positive things about yourself
The trick to developing your toolbox is to begin coming up with ideas when you are in a positive mood. Ask yourself what helps you feel happy. Then get busy creating your list. You can get as creative as you like.
